Ok, so did some additional diagnostics today......
1) Removed the pipe from carb to canister. No fuel flow. And when engine was running, no change to idle speed when hose was removed.2) I ended up putting fresh plugs in anyway, but made no difference.3) I also took off the distributor cap - cap was replaced when car was gone through in August of 2013 and seems ok. There was a dusting of a yellowish powder     on the inside of the cap, and also in the distributor itself - you can see it in the pictures. Not a lot. Here are pics of the cap and rotor -

Car still will start when cold, runs very 'lumpy' and almost dies.
What should be the next steps?

Agreed, does sound rich, which would be a cause of a smelly exhaust and not starting hot. Coils can also fail when hot, but the symptom of that would be no spark. It is now time to start looking at the carb, and first I'd take the pipe to the canister from the carb and with the ignition on see if you have fuel overflow i.e. faulty float valve or sunk float. PaulH.
----- Original Message -----        If they are black, that mean that the car is running too rich. If they get too black, they will not fire properly.
