With one exception the fuses, including various in-line, were 17 amp
continuous rated (usually marked as this), 35 amp blow. The exception was a
500mA feeding the short-lived sequential seat-belt system of 1972. Most
circuits don't need 17 amps, but apart from the odd man out the fuses are
there to protect the wiring not the components, and it's more convenient to
keep them all the same plus two spares in the fusebox.
If one has blown, even at 10 amps, it indicates a short. The purple fuse on
a North American 71 feeds the usual things like horns, interior lights and
headlamp flasher, the cigar lighter, and the 'key in door open' drivers door
switch.
