[Mgs] Unlatching Hood/Bonnet

A friend of mine just contacted me with a problem that I haven't encountered
yet on my own cars. The hood latch cable has evidently broken and pulled right
out of its mounting spot. What is the best way to open the hood now? Is it
possible to reach through the rubber bumper grille opening and unlatch it? If
I recall there is a screen in the way, at least there is in my 1980 LE. Any
suggestions? I haven't seen it yet so don't know how bad it is.
