On the occasions I have the hood up on my AH BJ-7
Simon, I ALSO have the rear 'window' un-clipped and
folded down' (except in rain STORMS) which seems
to remove said 'increased noise' <G>!! 

And on LONG trips, doing the hood that way is a God
Send (same in Wife's '72 Black Tulip MGB)!! 
Way COOLER in both cars !!

Except for concours, I HIGHLY recommend the zip-
out rear 'window' !!
