Ask yourself the same question about today's internal combustion engine
electronic controls.  Highly complex, beyond the ken of any garage short of
swapping black boxes, which in most cases are probably only available from
main dealers or scrapyards.  There's a lot more to it than a battery, motor,
and a big variable resistor ... ;o)
