Oliver........

A little known fact is that the terminal sizes have aways been different  
as far as I know....
If you had to pry one a lot and squeeze teh other a lot its likely to be  
in backwards.
otherwise disconnect the Gererator and check ground to the hot with a  
voltmeter drectly on
the generator aas its isolated from the battery.

If I remember my motor theory right that is.....
