I had previously tried large persuaders.

Actually, the problem happened to me twice (same type of car,
different cars: Alfasud). The first time it happened, I did not have a
flat, rather a flat spot on the tyre, so I drove to work, where 15
minutes with some releasing fluid did the trick.

I have never found releasing fluid that worked as well as they had at
that lab (Lucas Research Centre). It was pure magic in a can!

The reason for the problem on that car was that the wheel was an
interference fit on the boss on the hub. This rusted, unless one
greased the hub/wheel contact point.
