[Mgs] Ignition in the muffler

Hi,

I have a MGC that I have been working on replacing the bushings in 
the front end.  So the car has sat for awhile with out running.  I 
got it running last weekend and it ran poorly without ever settling 
down when warm to an idle, when the rpms went below about 1500 I 
started to get a lot of popping from the exhaust system.

What could be causing that.
