I did say 'except perhaps right by the battery'. Perhaps I should have added 
'from heat generated inside the battery in the same way that too much heat 
applied to a solder tag will damage the insulation of the wire attached to 
it, metal in general and copper in particular being a good conductor of 
heat'.
