Without going into details, I was checking it out when it came back and I've noticed that two of the caps do not "snap" into place, like I've been taught they should. They have no perceptible wiggle, but they can be slid fore and aft when fully in position. Again there is no "click" when you put them into position one edge at a time like I've has with other Rover blocks. When you read Des Hammil's book on power tuning the Rover engines, he would suggest that an engine like this be scrapped, less it succumb to the "black death" of fretting. He dedicates probably a half-dozen pages as to why blocks like this shouldn't be used in a rebuild. Can any one confirm if this is as big of an issue as he makes it out to be? He also implies that the only solution is to have that part of the engine machined a bit lower and then align-honed with the caps in place. Is this the only way, or could I slip in a bit of shim-stock along side the cap to reduce fretting? I'm also going to check for cracks tonight. I've already had my Buick 300 crank turned down for the 3.9 mains and internally balanced, which is why I'm trying to stay with w 3.9 instead of a cross-bolted 4.0L V/R James From therays at ellijay.com Fri Jun 18 14:56:46 2010 From: therays at ellijay.com (The Rays) Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2010 16:56:46 -0400 Subject: [Mgb-v8] I have an MGB V8 question Message-ID: I have an MG question I hope someone can answer for me. If it's knocking, consider this: Do you have a vacuum-advance on your distributor? Might want to check for leaks/cracks. If it's hesitating, and you have a carburetor, check your acceleration enrichment mechanism. Heat can cause all kinds of issues with carbs, from mechanical binding/expansion. If it's just one or two cylinders not firing, I don't know what to tell you (if it;s EFI, it's remotely possible that a intermittent injector short/open circuit could cause this) Again, if I'm way off here, somebody correct me so I can learn from this, too. The latter can be caused by an incorrect profile needle (if SUs or other CD carb) giving weak mixture at part throttle acceleration, needing full throttle to get past it. As confirmation you can richen the mixture and if that cures it fit a 'richer' needle i.e. one that tapers more rapidly. If misfiring which should cause popping and banging in the exhaust the other important question is, is the tach fluttering when the symptom occurs or is it steady? If fluttering then it is an ignition LT problem i.e. ignition feed, coil, points, distributor ground wire, and connections between them. If steady then it points to HT or fuel, but could be condenser. But without knowing what engine, fuel or ignition systems you have it is very difficult to advise further. I have recently been sorting her out, renewing hoses and rubber bits; turning the engine over by hand, etc. to ease her back onto the road, now that I have my own house and garage to work in. I have an opportunity to purchase a 99 Land Rover Discovery with a 4.0 V8 for a song and I'm considering the swap. I would have to take possession of the entire vehicle (major collision but was 'still running' when parked a couple years ago). For those who have BTDT, which bits should I grab and which should I leave? I would like to use as much of the injection and ignition systems as I can, though I understand maybe a bit of modification might be necessary. If you have any insight, or just want to encourage or discourage me, please reply. Much thanks in advance.
