Fair do's 3/4 of the mileage was motorway covered at a steady speed of 75, but 200 miles was single carriageway doing plenty of overtaking. About 7 hours each way. Google reckoned the distance was 822 miles, so the odometer at least is overreading by about 5.5%, which is about par for the course as 0% to 10% is the allowable range in the UK. Took the indicated mileage to 99387, but that is the 2nd time around, with one rebore and probably crank grind about 100k miles ago I reckon. Used no water and only a couple of millimetres of oil on the dip-stick. Weather lovely in Scotland on the Saturday and all the way back on the Monday, absolutely dire for the climb on Sunday - cloud base just above sea level, howling gale, horizontal rain, freezing cold (we were in snow at the summit), and visibility just a few yards. Overdue for a bad one, the previous five climbs had all been good weather. By world standards Ben Nevis isn't particularly high at 4403ft/1344m but the base is at sea-level so you climb all of it! Came across hundreds of '3 peaks' challengers on the way down, attempting to climb the highest peaks in Scotland, England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) including travel between them in 24 hours. We are doing our own '3 peaks' - Snowdon a couple of years ago, Ben Nevis this year, and Scafell Pike in a year or so :o) PaulH. I just saw a travelogue about Wales on the local educational channel. A Rick Steves show. He's an American who tours Eurpoe and tells us what's the best way to go about it. Anyway, he went up Snowdon. That also looks like a beautiful area, so your next year's trip will be more than worthwhile too ! My last hike in the mountains was at the British V8 Meet in Townsend, Tennessee summer before last. Maybe I'm working too much. Time to head for the hills. Thanks for sharing your trip with us. The 3rd peak (that's next) is Scafell Pike in England, one of many fell (hill) walks in the confusingly-named Lake District. As a boy I had heard someone describe the ridge-walk to Snowdon as pretty spectacular as it falls away very steeply both sides. In my innocence I imagined there was a path that fell away both sides. On the day our leader asked which route we wanted to do so I said the ridgewalk, he raised an eyebrow, asked everybody else who said they were happy to do it (also innocents). From the Llanberis Pass the route to the ridge starts off flat then gets ever steeper until it is vertical, which was bad enough (for us once-per-year walkers). But then on the ridge there is no path, just the ridge! The one side is sheer falling away very steeply for hundreds of feet and proper mountaineers territory, the other side does have small foot-holds but still falls almost as steeply. Pretty scary, but we did it. http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/ww06.htm PaulH. ----- Original Message ----- Anyway, he went up Snowdon. But alas, no. I've tried. It sounds like the speaker's tongue has been cut out, and it looks, on the printed page, like it was written FOR a people whose tongues have been cut out. None the less, it's a beautiful land, from what I've seen (especially your pictures), and I'd like to visit.
