Hi Friends,
New drive gear on the distributor, bushing verified good, new springs on advance, new points, new condenser, new cap. This a replacement cap from Moss with NO continuity between the center pole and the carbon brush! TWO bad caps. If ordering, ask them to test. I ended up deforming the lower end of the spring so that a wire stuck out far enough to make the connection. After testing continuity, I rotated the engine to TDC (static) and installed the distributor using assembly lube on the drive gear. With the ignition on and no choke, I pulled the starter. Voila! Perfect idle, if too high.
After perhaps 5 minutes, I adjusted idle down to 900 rpm and verified the air balance. Transition off idle and fast engine speeds are now excellent. My car's entire problem was a wonky distributor. Okay, on to the next issue.
