If it is the bulb for a round-lens TD, consider using an LED from
Superbrightleds. If will not work in the early TD tail lamp, but it is a very
bright tail light and instant-on brake light that is more visible to the
following driver than an 1157.

It depends on the age of the TD. Early TDs use brake/tail lamp bulbs with
symmetrical bayonet pins (Lucas 189). Later TDs and the TF use bulbs with
offset pins (Lucas 361). Sorry, I don't have the numbers for US equivalents
handy.
