Stu,

Check the welsh plugs at either end of the intake manifold.  these have 
been know to loosen up and drop out.  Also check the manifold gasket.

hello stu.

must be an opening on the intake side.  not sure what you rigged up for the
cruise control but that would be the first place to look.. and not just at
the junction of the vacuum line to the intake manifold but especially the
line itself as it runs to the cruise control device and for that matter in
the cruise control device itself.   can you blank ( shut )the cruise control
vacuum as it leaves the intake manifold as a test?  if that solves the
problem then you will know it's somewhere up that end.
  the gasket for the intake/exhaust manifold is one-piece.a backfire could
possibly break it but not likely... and  loose nuts on the fixing studs
could allow plenty of air to enter thereby killing the vacuum too.  ( also
cracks in the manifold etc. )

  but I think best to check the possible fault in the cruise control
department first

Twenty-nine years ago, a hearty band of British car enthusiasts got
together over picnics at a park to view each other's cars and enjoy
each other's friendship. This year, we return to that heritage.

Over the past 29 years this event has grown considerably and now
attracts participants from all over California and beyond. We are
proud that this event has evolved into one of the premier British
car shows in California. Over the last few years, the event has
incurred considerable additional expense including forming a legal
corporation and increased insurance coverage.

Thus, we have made some changes in keeping with the original spirit
of the event.  For instance, there will be no vendors, program or
raffle at this year's show. It should be noted that this has returned
to a picnic event. REMEMBER, bring a picnic lunch and beverage of
