It doesn't matter where the wires are connected, the danger is still 
there - you are connecting negative 12 volts to the ground side of the 
device you are plugging in and if that device has any exposed metal that 
is in contact with the ground in the device, it will cause a problem if 
it comes in contact with the car's ground.
