forklifts have front wheel brakes and its well known on how good they
handle...

I remember an old high school Physics experiment that involved a toy car
going down an inclined plane: with the front wheels locked up it went
straight down the inclined plane; with the back wheels locked up it spun
out----the reason being that sliding friction was less than rolling
friction.

For that reason, I would put the brakes on the front wheels if you are going
to use brakes on just one axle.

That's also why the front wheel brakes on civilian vehicles provide the
higher percentage of braking effort.
