Interesting read.  Especially the sentence under "Probable Cause" that
reads:
"The reduced stiffness was a result of deteriorated locknut inserts that
allowed the trim tab attachment screws to become loose and to initiate
fatigue cracking in one screw sometime before the accident flight."
Most of us if we use elastic stop nuts or similar plastic thread lockers we
don't use them on prestressed alloy bolts.   Rather they get mostly used on
suspension or control bolts that don't have fatigue issues.  But the more we
push our limits the more likely we are to encounter such things in our LSR
machines.
I'm going to put my mechanical engineer's hat on for a moment and suggest
you creative guys who build really fast machines get a little familiar with
the subject of fastener fatigue and prestressing (by torquing) and the
meaning of the "modified Goodman diagram" (google this phrase). "metal
fatigue" and "metal endurance limit".  Not a lot of math there; but a basic
understanding or aluminum and steel metallurgy will help.

Mayf - I think a lot of us old guys are still recovering from Speedweek.  Me 
included.
Then there is the shock of Glen getting summarily fired by email from his 
timing tower job.  SCTA politics, likely.  New faces, big cojones, etc., 
etc.  Same old story.  The sport survives and grows.  The good guys get old 
and retire and new ones grow to take their places if not necessarily fill

No, Mayf; not dead; we had been on a long vacation after Speed Week. Joline 
& I took our travel trailer on up to Lake Tahoe (Zephyr Cove) for a couple 
of weeks and then stopped by to see Joline's sister and her son in SoCal.

For the last few days I've been organizing my collection of blind rivets, 
trying to bring order out of chaos. I generated an Excel spreadsheet with 
the part number, drill hole size, grip length, stem & sleeve material, and 
single shear and tensile strength. There were nominal sizes and oversize 
rivets as well. Lots of rivets, but now I know just what I have and they are 
organized into bins. Whew!

I am having trouble with my Thunderbird email client and Mozilla has 
decided to not support that product anymore. It is being left to hackers 
to continue it's support. Do any of you use Microsoft's *Outloo**k* 
email client? Not Outlook Express, but, the full featured Outlook? If 
so, how do you like it?  contact me via personal message to keep the 
list chatter to a minimum.. I need something since Thunderbird quit 
displaying  graphics in my email. I have tried everything that Mozilla 
says to do and that problem is killing me.

I use the latest incarnation of Firefox and Thunderbird rolled into one, 
a package
called seamonkey.  Works well for me.

I use Mozilla and also use Microsoft Outlook--have used it for more than ten
years and would never use anything else for my email.

You can't get/send graphics with "plain text" email (like we are using
here). You need the HTML email format to get/send graphics. Outlook allows
both plain text and HTML formats and I almost always use HTML.

Don't get stuck with an email service that restricts you to only plain text.

I also use Earthlink with my Mozilla and would never use junk like
Yahoo,etc.
