Except one, lol. I am going to use self ejecting buttons on fiberglass and that will require that I "dimple" the fiberglass in order to install the button and spring assy. Large drill bits seem to have the wrong angle and shape: so what works? Please send replies directly to me as I have temporarily turned off my list email for a while..headed off on vacation shortly and I don't want a million email memos in my in basket. mayf drmayf at mayfco.com thanks! -- ______________________________ drmayf Worlds Fastest Sunbeam, period. 204.913 mph flying mile 210.779 mph exit speed From 23.weldon at comcast.net Fri Jun 8 09:43:49 2012 From: 23.weldon at comcast.net (23weldon) Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2012 08:43:49 -0700 Subject: [Land-speed] Dzus Fastener Question References: <4FD2019A.3040006@mayfco.com> Message-ID: <2C9783E7D5B34BC9A2BD31EDC7F52938@edc2750afa5a84> Most of my collection of ordinary size 5 Dzus Buttons have a taper of 120 degrees included angle. McMaster-Carr sells 120 degree countersinks on catalog page 2466: http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/118/2466/=hvzzal But I'm not sure that 120 degrees is right for the self ejecting buttons Mayf wants to use. The above page shows single, 3 and 6 flute countersinks in two different steels. There's also the question in my mind what is the best way to drill and pilot (if needed) the hole to keep from making a mess of the fiberglass. Hand drilling a nice finished fiberglass panel would scare me if I didn't know the right way to do it. I don't think Mayf has much in the way of lathe capabilities out there in Pahrump to make a piloting setup; so he's probably going to have to buy what he needs. He may be able to cobble up an aluminum or steel plate to go under the panel and put a conical depression in it with the countersink to guide the end of the countersink to the right depth. On my street roadster tonneau I used a piloted counter bore with a diameter to clear the shoulder of the Dzus button hold down plate. I made a tool out of 1/16 steel with three #30 holes in it. One for the button hole and two for the rivet holes in the plate. Locate where you want the button just as if it was a metal panel, drill a #30 hole, attach the tool with a cleco and drill the two rivet holes, remove the tool and open up the center hole with the counter bore. This leaves a nice clean non feather edged hole in the glass. It helps to orient the rivet holes in the plate at 90 degrees to the rivets holding the Dzus spring to avoid interference. This is another try. Thanks Dan Webster Dan, I have a 1946 Ford Sedan Delivery which was originally painted maroon from the Ford Factory. It was purchased by the Wendover City Police in 1946 and painted black on the bottom half & white on the top half. When they started running at Bonneville, the city police would pick up parts at the bus terminal and deliver them to the Salt Flats. The Ford was used repeatedly to test the salt and timing lights in the beginning to 1951. Lou Colton said it was one of the first cars to run on the track. In 1949 or 1950 it was given to the Speed Association and stored race track equipment in it and parked it at Howard De Vanneybs Service Station. Howard also owned the Stateline Casino. The Association blew up the engine and made it into a trailer. The trailer was pulled out to the track during the races. In about 1954, the association gave the trailer back to Howard De Vanny. Howard then gave it to his nephew, Lou Coltan in 1970. Lou was the City Engineer of Wells, Nevada. The City of Wells used it as storage for pipe fittings. In 1972 or 1973, Lou said the city was hauling it to the dumps. I asked for it and Lou gave the trailer to me. I bought a 1946 Sedan from the Las Vegas area and rebuilt the Sedan Delivery. I left the bullet hole in the passenger door which is under the stainless trim. I also left the braces on the top which were for the sirens. I restamped the frame with the original frame number 99A-1183080. I appreciate your help on any information on the 1946 Ford Sedan Delivery. It is a wonderful story about an old Ford.
