In the past when there has been a lot of water in the winter like last 
year, the salt conditions are very good
the following year.

So we've got an engine on the dyno that should either be ready for
installation or recondsiderment by the end of the week. I am forecasting
some late night sessions out in the shop in my near future. The timing is
just about right since we still have quite a bit to do to button it all up
in time to leave south east Texas in early August. Needless to say, we will
press on hoping for good salt conditions and will appreciate any posts to
the list concerning such. 

Since we never really know for sure what is going to happen, I haven't
reserved much in the way of hotel rooms and SWWNBD likes sleeping in real
hotel rooms, I am looking for anyone that might have some extra rooms they
are looking to dump. Let me know off line if you've got something to move.

Oh, and BTW, is anybody else working on stuff and posting here, or is the
list beginning to go quiet???

I think it is called an import tariff.. When the global economy deal started 
this all started.. The feds are depressing out currency as well to make 
things we sell chaeper to other countries and that might have been ok if 
Americans bought american and did more export than import but all they 
accomplished is to increase the trade defict with cheap US dollars.. I think 
we need to flush all the current politicians and just start over..

So on Monday I thought I would make some method of attaching a push board to
my new GMC. It has sort of a bumper bolted to some crush thinks, but it is all
pretty sturdy and should be great. So I cut out some angled aluminum blocks 1
X 4 X taper from 3/4 to 2 1/2. They bolt on and sandwich the bumper between
them and the frame. But the bumper flexes more than I thought it would and
they don't end up vertical. No worry. I'll cut some steel brackets to allow
for the angle and support the whole board top to bottom. I need a right and a
left version. So I saw them out and finish them on the mill. Then I sit down
to bolt them to the truck. Naturally I have the right one that I'm trying to
bolt to the left side. So I put it down. Pick up the left one and bolt it on.
Now I need to move the truck to get a better shot at the right side. Done, and
I move my drill motor, bits, wrenches and all to the right side. Where is the
bracket? The one I just had. I look for
 it for 45 minutes and it's getting to dinner time so I decide to pick it up
later.             .....Tuesday is senior discount day at the market so I have
to go grocery shopping and then go up to Norm Rapp's to pick up some change
gears to take to Bonneville for Flat Cad. Then I spend 2 hours looking for the
bracket. How far could it go? It's got to be right here......Today I had some
people coming by to look at the Studebaker Hawk I was selling, so I'm in the
garage kind of looking and kind of selling. My neighbor Jay comes over. New,
young eyes. And we look for about half an hour. No luck, and I could have made
5 of them by now, so I saw another piece off the tube, lay it out, and cut i
rough to shape on the saw. Set it up in the mill and make the first rough cut
on the tapered side. Measure it against the existing bracket and begin the
finish cut. About 3/4 way through the finish cut I notice the lost bracket
laying on the cart with the
 mill vices and rotary chuck. A good 80 feet from the GMC. It didn't walk
here. I must have brought it. But why? Jay and I had agreed that if I made a
new one I would find the old one. If there is a God he has a nasty sense of
humor.    RF

     I can identify with that Rich. I have a six inch scale that I bought 
when I started my apprenticeship at Lockheed in 1962. I loose it about three 
times a year under exactly the scenario you describe. I tell you getting old 
isn't for the weak.

My motor guy was here last week. Together the "where'd it go?" experience increases exponentially I found. 
I remember following my kid into her room when she was small, she was after something. When she got into her room you could watch her stop and get distracted, all the other toys and whatever about. I think it's like that with me, kind of a "2001, a Space Odyssey" time loop thing happening.

Well, I've had that in spades.
I also had a wife that would "put things away" when I put them down.  Salad 
fork? Bills? Tools?

She eventually left me because she couldn't sleep knowing something in my 
office might be out of place. I still love her dearly - she is a wonderful 
person.  But DANG!  Call the vet, we have a sick puppy.

Now . . . what wuz I doing?

I had an ex wife that did the same thing with things in the kitchen and she
never cooked to speak of me 99% of the time and I like to cook to be honest.
Easy fix was to rearrainge her shoes as all lefts and all rights in varying
color patterns then mixing and matching her biz suits in combinations I
thought 'interesting'.. LOL

it hides from me!  I can go to the shop looking for a doohickey and I 
just know where it was last. Except, that it isn't there. I rummage 
through the shop still not finding what I am after. Go back a few hours 
later and there it is, right where it was supposed to be the first 
time!  It is truly aggravating....  This only happens three or four 
times a day....

Glad to see that I am not alone in my perplexity...

Whenever I do a major cleanup in my shop it is like going to a swap meet, 
discovering all kinds of neat stuff and not having to pay for any of it.
Coping ------ I always carry a sharpie pen in my pocket.  Everything opaque 
container or box gets marked with the contents.
Swap meets -- Anytime I see a cheap tape measure I buy it.  I put one in my 
pocket in the morning and by noon it has disappeared. Ditto the sharpie pen. 
I buy boxes of them at Costco.
A lot of foods are packed in wide mouth clear plastic jars these days. Clear 
plastic containers are great because you can see what's inside.  The 
dishwasher cleans them out and usually loosens the labels.  Unlike glass 
jars they usually don't break when dropped.
Garden tools -- They all get painted orange for visibility.
I keep a detailed calendar.  I never had to do that when I was a kid.  .I 
don't have any other to-do lists.  Those things are depressing tyrants.
I have to write down the names of the friend's and neighbor's kids and pets. 
Ditto passwords and pin #'s.
My old feet don't like new shoes.  A stitch-all is a great tool for 
preserving old shoes. Glad I don't have to go on job interviews any more.

That's the best explanation I've heard to date.

But maybe it's bigger than that--maybe they are making copies from more than
one world.  Sometimes they make a mistake and temporarily send something
back to the wrong world after making a copy, that would explain flying
saucers, Yetis, Loch Ness monsters, etc.

Any evidence they are copying our women ?

I have been having trouble keeping the teflon seals in my 8-71.
The teflon melts and chunks out of the rotors after about 3 runs
at the salt at 18% overdrive on a 430 inch engine.
The guys at the blower shop say it to be cooler but won't say
how much gas needs to go through the blower. Right now I have
15% going through the blower and 85% through the port nozzles.
My inclination is to go to 25/75 or 30/60.....maybe the latter
just to be safe.

Someone know what is best? Or have an opinion....

How much boost as that will decribe what the charge air temp is and how much 
fuel you need to get it cold enough to be ok. I was always under the 
impression the port nozzles were for triming cylinders rather than supplying 
the majority of fuel. If it was me I would be thinking 75 to 80% on top  and 
trim with the port nozzles.

I think the strips on the center of the rotor lobe is Nylatron....Black.... 
The strips on the inside of the rotor are white....I assume Teflon. All of 
it seems to be melting.

Yeah Skip, it is a perilous problem. Right now you have a very lean mix up
there. You know how lean AFR acts . . . lazy, slow-burn, and most likely not
ignitable. As you increase the AFR inside the blower you raise the potential
for an explosion.  IMHO, I would never run a blower near stoich. I would be
very far away from stoich (either side, rich or lean). Probably why the shop
won't give a quantitative answer.

Skip: I doubt your blower shop hasn't already optimized the seal material so
this may only be interesting information without application. However, check
out the table and compare Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) to most of the
nylons. I have machined PEEK for bearings and it is a great material.

We will be driving this 1946 Dodge rat truck. I have heard rumors of there not
being racing this year. Is that true? We'd hate to make the trip down and back

More like liberty in a world where we have to pay our bills and quit 
borrowing?
It ain't gonna be fun, kiddies.....

I know you all can do arithmetic.  Like figuring tire size or gear change to 
get the right rpm at the speed you need to qualify, figuring your cubic 
inches after the cleanup bore on an engine block or the amount of nitro to 
add to the mixing jug to add 10% to the mix.  If you know how to multiply 
and divide then certainly you know how to add and subtract.

 So here you are, 3 mph under the record with your last chance to get in 
line today and barely enough time to mix up some fuel.  There's the jug of 
nitro staring at you and there you are visualizing pistons with holes in 
them. ........ And the dark clouds are gathering over the Silver Island 
Mountains.  And your plan B is take down the tarp, cover the race car, 
batten down the trailer and head for Wendover.

Now go look up the real breakdown of the federal budget on the internet, 
study it for a few minutes and then tell us what you want to cut and where 
to make it balance and when is a good time to make those tough decisions.

It's like whether you want to review your run records, carefully calculate 
the fuel mix for the next run think about it and wait for the cool air of 
tomorrow morning.  Or simply listen to the smart ass on your crew, the one 
who doesn't have any financial stake in the race car, who wants to dump the 
whole jug of nitro into the fuel, say a prayer and go get in line.

without the ok of Congress is a monarchy and in violition of our 
Constitution . It was his idea to ask for the debt limit extension just as 
he is nunning out of our money . He must be stopped .

In the past, if my finances became shaky, I knew that I had to cut spending
and maybe work OT or sell something to increase income. I could hope for the
lottery. But in truth, I knew I had to spend less and if possible make more. I
realize the national economy is not that simple. But I am affraid it's still
the only thing that works. If you have waited to long, maybe nothing works. I
know my savings is becoming worth less and less at an alarming rate. I can cut
back. But not a lot. Not much OT at being retired.  RF

Cuts ? Let's see....

'12 million illegal immigrants, 10 million crack heads, 20 million
unemployed bums too lazy to work, the entire cast of The Jerry Springer  Show,
over
two million  people in all the penal establishments in the  US (at $50K @),
2 million leftovers from Katrina, half of Mexico, all of the  House of
Representatives, most of the Senate, $58 Billion in Foreign aid, 152  military
bases in foreign countries, and Michelle Obamabs trip to visit  relatives in
Africa.
And my favorite, and probably a lot of people reading this, Ethanol, the
biggest continuing boondoggle in US history.
It seems the only real issue is  to concede a stall to get all these
gasbags past the next election, most  notably, King Outtatoucha hisself.

I can promise a wage and price freeze will not work. Jack I had always 
thought you wanted less government not more. I think if we give the feds 
control over prices and wages it is just over period we are officially 
enslaved.. Closing our borders and sending back illegals would certainly 
lighten the load financially as well. Revalueing the dollar would reduce our 
energy costs instantly and just add import tarrifs for all the devalued 
Chinese stuff if they refuse to correctly value their currency. Currently 
the dollar is devalued intentionally so some fortune 500 companies are more 
competitive in export unfortunately that is on the back of every man woman 
and child in the USA that buys anything..

An Allegory About The Emperor And His 300 Million Living Cells

There he goes again enjoying the summer warmth in his kingdom.  And as has 
been his habit of late he is butt naked.  He likes it that way; his body 
feels so free.  But fear is rising in the community.  Cold weather is 
threatening and if the Emperor gets a chill and falls ill the wrath of the 
gods will fall upon us.

If we speak of his nakedness it will be "off with our heads".  All agree 
that he must be dressed to survive the winds of the coming winter.  All 
agree that a suitable cloak is needed; but Mr.  D and Mr. R are the only 
weavers among us.  Mr. R's Teanager, whose help is needed, insists on his 
own features in the cloak's design or he won't do his part in the weaving 
and sewing.  For many weeks Mr. D and Mr. R have been unable to agree on the 
cloak's design.  Mr. R, by far the best salesman of the group,  has got the 
Emperor's ear and is gradually winning him over to his cloak design.

Still, no one dares tell the Emperor that without any clothes he will die of 
exposure.  All they do is hint that a cloak is needed to keep him warm.  But 
right now the Emperor shrugs and replies "What's all this fuss about a cloak 
to keep me warm.  Look at the sun shining.  I'm quite comfortable"

Through all of this Mr. I, a noted clothier, has been largely silent.  And 
Mr. P, the person whose job is to approve the cloak and present it to the 
Emperor and try to get him to button it up and wear it properly, stayed out 
of the argument for a while.   But lately Mr. P sees the predicted clouds of 
winter on the horizon is trying hard to get D and R to get on with the 
project.  And of course R is bitterly blaming P and D for not cooperating.

And through all of this everybody is terrified of telling the Emperor the 
real truth about reality of his nakedness and how much that cloak is going 
to weigh wrapped around his body.

And all seem to have forgotten the issues of fixing the leaks in the palace 
roof, holes in its walls, the broken chimney over the hearth and build a 
stock of firewood for the winter.
