We had heard that spraying vegetable oil on the underside of our car and truck 
helped limit the amount of salt that would accumulate. This worked great. This 
year my wife ambitiously also sprayed the paint of our car and truck. It worked 
great, the salt didn't stick. The only problem is, many car washes later, it's 
still there. It took a plastic scouring pad to get it off the windows and metal 
bumper -- I'm afraid to apply such harsh treatment to the paint. What would 
those-who've-gone-before recommend for removing the vegetable oil but not 
hurting the finish? Many thanks.

I work the polls. I have been an Election Judge for years to make absolutely
sure that in my Precinct (neighborhood), everyone that is entitled gets to
cast a fair ballot. Even the stupid ones. The job is harder than you think.
When you vote, please remember to thank your poll workers, because it is a
crappy job that takes lots of personal time for which we often put up with
naggy, unhappy voters.
You waited in line 20 minutes? BFD. The poll workers were there from 6:00Am
to 8:00PM making sure your wait was worth it.
Volunteer if you're honest. (Oh crap, I just said that to a bunch of
Bonneville racers!) (I know you are honest... cheating is not worth crap in
this sport!)

20 minutes is nothing.

Here in WA state, there were waits of over 4 hours to
vote.  98% of voting is 
done by mail now, and they have very limited polling
stations for people to do 
it in person.  I did it by mail.

Usually I start with a Ford pilot bushing and maybe make a sleeve for it or
turn it to fit. But usually I am using a Ford transmission. It would depend on
what I was trying to do.

Thought the same, put it down to you'll having Winter, Summer full on here
'down under'. Taking our rods our regularly with plenty of short and long runs
going on.
Got a toy run on next Friday night for local kiddies home. Our club Eastside
Streetrods promotes it with a buffet meal and few beers later, always well
supported.

Also knee deep in doing bunch of updates on our LSR roadster, won't be back
till 2012 though.

Big rush around for me yesterday and today getting ready for some doctors from
Joanie's work. She is the "Den Mother" for all the visiting doctors in her
lap. We teach thme about Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Wine and dine
them on tradional Amercian fare.
 
I just opened my second bottle of wine in anticipation of their arrival.

Chris! Good to hear from you waaayyy down under.  Maybe we should have a 
summer home down there, lol.  While not insanely cold it is 28 dF here 
this morning. Cold enough for me for sure.

What kind of updates are being done on the roadster?  My roadster, the 
Sunbeam (yeah, it was called a roadster by the manufacturer), is getting 
a custom made aluminum sea for my big butt which will lower me about 5 
inches and that will require cutting the cage loose and lowering it 
also.  Reworking teh brake pedal and throttl eto accomodate that change. 
Oops forgot to say that the wind screen will change as well as the 
instrument panel.  Then I tackle the front of the car with some "bolt 
on" aero changes which I have yet to figure out. So I will be busy as 
well. And yeah, me too, likely to be only a spectator this coming year.

It is not dead but with snow on the ground and freezing temperatures in the
UK and dark autumn/winter evenings there is not much to write about.
Improvements to the "World's Fastest Sunbeam" suggest that you will get more
speed next time you run on the salt.  Look forward to hearing on the 'list'
all about your work on the car.

It is the jet stream and for every place colder there is one that is warmer 
plus we are less than 100 years out of the last 500 year long mini ice age 
when it snowed in New England in July for days and crops failed and sheep 
died of exposure  overnight, this all happened just a couple of hundred 
years ago. This same weather pattern also gave us the French revolution the 
plague and Irish potato famine among other treats..

OK on another subject the advertising of electric cars as zero emissions. 
How about fetching a bucket of electricity that I can use to power my car 
without making any emissions..LOL.. It has to come from somewhere. After 
finding that tell me where to store my worn out batteries that are hazardous 
waste BTW..LOL What a crock of cow patties... I have a bridge I would love 
to sell to the people that believe that silly banter.

One of my new pals who helps at Loring has built an electric motorcycle and electric pick up. The pick-up is old tech using 800 pounds of lead batteries, and is simple. 
If I lived in the woods of Maine, where I could creep home at 25 mph if necessary, I'd probably own one, plus some panels at home too....

Did I mention that in my opinion race engine crank balancing is a waste of
money for these reasons :

Production cranks like the 427 Chev I'm using are balanced only to keep it
from rattling the car . Look at the oversize end counterweights and they work
fine .

While the piston and rods are changing speed the crank is underbalanced . When
the piston speed is constant they're over balanced .

Crank balancers can't tell which part is off , only the average .

Right on Dave!

I think global warming is a big waste of my time. One of two events will 
take place.

1) The temps. keep going up because we have not evolved to a high enough 
level that will allow us to
     get together and reduce CO2 levels. End result, extension of the 
human race.
2) The temps. keep going up due to normal natural causes. End result, 
extinction of the human race.

After all, 99% of everything that ever lived on our planet has become 
extinct. Earth is not very friendly
to living things.

Is it really happening?  No! The reason it looks like it is simple. In 
some places the melting point of ice has
changed from 32dF to 20-25 dF. In other areas the growing plants have 
just evolved so that they can start
blooming earlier in the spring when the days are shorter and the temps 
are colder.

Also temperature measuring instruments are being affected by Dark Energy 
which makes them read
artificially high. Especially around glaciers.

The electric car nonsense is just another example of why we need to 
evolve further up the ladder of life
to survive as a species.

In a nutshell all current low emission variants of whatever power source are
infinitely more 'dirty' to manufacture & recycle.

How about fetching a bucket of electricity that I can use to power my car
without making any emissions..LOL.. It has to come from somewhere. After
finding that tell me where to store my worn out batteries that are hazardous
waste BTW..LOL What a crock of cow patties... I have a bridge I would love
to sell to the people that believe that silly banter.

Like many other LSR racers, I had one specific goal - - 200 mph.  I was just
looking through my "journal" and came up with some interesting statistics.
 
It took me five years to reach my goal. 
It cost $31,000 in car parts. 
It took eleven trips to the races. 
I didn't keep records on the cost of the trips to the races, but I'm sure it's
over $10,000. 
I bought a truck and trailer, but since they see other service, I didn't even
figure them into the cost of the quest. 
The fever started at 115, then progressed through 149, 151, 157, 158, 171,
178, 194, 195, 199 and finally reached 200. 
 
Was it worth it?  Well, let me put it this way, every time I glance over at my
200 hat hanging on the wall, a smile speads across my face that takes about an
hour to go away.  I will never forget the course workers jumping up and down,
giving me the thumbs up, and holding up the magic two fingers.  I will never
forget my wife jumping out of the tow truck at the finish line with a giant
smile and a 200 time slip.  Was it worth it?  Absolutely!

Great post, Dick and congrats!
We started the quest in 2000 and have made I don't know how many passes.
We've made at least one event every year since 2000 and sometimes two. I
don't even think about the cost of engines, but with records in AA, A, B, C,
and D, you can guess (but don't tell my wife)! Truck and trailer, check.
And you did it with just $31K? You must be lucky AND smart!
Years ago with the B engine, there was that oh-so-close pass of 198...
This year, we finally made the big red brick go over 200 and crushed the AA
record at 213.490.
Satisfying indeed, but there is just a couple of more little things that
need to get done...
I guess that is why we stay in the battle!
