In about 1947 when GM was planning the Olds and Cadillac ohv v8's which were the first modern high compression engines they used glass heads and high speed photography on a single cylinder engine to understand detonation . We saw a film about that in science class in 1955 . I remember that more clearly than anything else in high school .
