Bill, remember that the flex plate is also bolted to a very close 
tolerance torque converter (generally) and that brings the flex plate 
back into trueness. The flex plate just carries the starter ring gear as 
its only purpose in life. I don't remember whether or not you are using 
a torque converter, but that will straighten out the issue.
