Richard -

Incidentally, there is only one Whitworth bolt on a BN1 as far as I'm aware - on the Dynamo adjustment bracket.

Bolts and nuts on a BN1 are generally easy to identify - anything on the drivetrain will be BSF, and anything on the chassis will be UNF (SAE Fine).

Anything on the carbs or instruments will be BA, except for the fuel line which generally BSP (if I am not mistaken).

Best,

Alan

On Tue, Mar 28, 2023 at 8:09 AM Alan Seigrist <healey.nut@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Richard -

The 16 written on the blade means the Threads Per Inch, which will always be the same regardless of the pitch angle. So in this case, a 3/8" Whitworth bolt will be 55 deg w/ 16 TPI, and a 3/8" UNC bolt will be 60 deg w/ 16 TPI. So when you put the sawtooth together like this, it will mesh.

That said, the tooth shape is a little different so if you hold that up to the light you will see gaps between the sawtooth. This is how you can tell with a thread guage if it is UNC or BSW, hold the bolt and sawtooth to the light and if you see gaps in the thread, its not a match, even if it does mesh together.

Best,

Alan

On Tue, Mar 28, 2023 at 4:48 AM richard mayor <boyracer466@gmail.com> wrote:

Just bought a “Whitworth" thread pitch gauge from British Tool because I’ve begun to restore a BN1 and I need to confirm the 55 degree thread pitch angle on the Whitworth bolts.

It turns out that British Tool and Fasteners thread pitch gauge is not actually Whitworth, even though they say it is.
