Anyone seen the Ferrari engines with a large, usually Fram(!) oil
filter mounted upside-down on top of each cylinder bank? I've always
wondered 1) why Ferrari did this and 2) how do you keep from dumping
2qts. of dirty oil on the engine when you change them out?<br>

Although the rubber--I think most are silicone now--anti-drainback
valves are a good idea, I think they allow most of the oil to drain
back eventually except, of course, when the filters are mounted
business-end up. They also only seal-up the inlet holes, so if the
filter gets tipped oil will drain out quickly from the outlet hole.<br>

K&N 2009's which fasten to the engine laterally and wish I
could find a spin-on adaptor that has the filter facing
(open-end) up simply because it is much easier to avoid a
mess. </div>

the bigger the better... usually the wider it is is more
preferable to the longer it is.

But for filter conversions on our healeys, they normally
sit sideways so you gotta get it with the oil bypass valve</div>

difference where the filter is made unless the
manufacturer specifies different material in its
manufacturing process. Absolutely every step of
the fabrication is automated and made by robots
except the step of lining up the bottom part of
the filter and I doubt an American can drop it
in place any better than a Chinese. See a video
on YouTube how Fram filters are made. </p>
