Another question for the panel……

I was digging for something in one of my boxes of “useful bits” the other day – we’ve all got such boxes?? – and, at the bottom languishing undisturbed for 25+ years, I found this mainshaft. (AEC 3486).

Looking at my parts book it would fit a MkII, centre shift, with or without OD. Not sure about later cars.

I’ve no idea how it wound up in my workshop; it’s never been in my MkII, that’s for sure. And – touch wood – I have no need of another mainshaft.

Now, it’s damaged with fairly significant damage to the first 20mm of the splines. See pics.

I’m wondering….. Is it worth keeping? Would it work or would it just wreck a perfectly good gearbox? Could it be fixed at a worthwhile price?

Or is it scrap? (I have a nephew-in-law(?) who is a talented blacksmith who could probably turn it into something or other!!)

To keep things in more venial perspective, these things cost £522:00 plus P&P from AHSpares……..
