          sure, I have some of this stuff at home but not with lead, but
          have various products that will assist in getting it to seal
          properly, learn something new every day.</p>

              past 30+ years I've worked on many original BN1/2/100M
              manifolds (10+) and they ALL had this packing string
              type packing material material and NONE with a rubber

                  wrong way around. The originals were made up of some
                  sort of string impregnated with lead. As you say once
                  used by plumbers. The original shape was a
                  circular cylinder shape with ends shaped to fit into
                  the beveled carburetor body on one side and a similar
                  shape to the clamping ring. The leaded string was then
                  forced tight when the plate was tightened.<o:p></o:p></p>

                        are very few things that I find when restoring
                        Austin-Healeys that surprise me anymore but
                        today, while dismantling a set of carbs for a
                        BN2, I came across this at one end of the
                        balance pipe. The correct part is a rubber gland
                        seal but at some point it was replaced by some
                        black plumber packing string, just shook my
                        head.</p>
