    That sounds better than even wheel bearing grease. This got me
    thinking; I have some water pump etc. grease on the shelf I haven't
    touched in over 30 years (my BJ8 originally came with a grease port;
    no zerk or cup). This is probably like the plumber's grease and
    should be ideal for this application; wish I'd thought of it in time
    (oh, well ... next time ... there WILL be a 'next time' if I know my
    cars).<br>

      Anti-seize is good, but for water, I like <b>plumber's heat proof
        grease</b>...a sticky reddish goo that you use on internal
      plumbing fixtures that turn as well, like our brass heater and rad
      valves. Yes, you have to disassemble the valve and coat the
      tapered cone, then reassemble...works perfect-maybe too good, as

                      Your photo made me check. It actuall does say off
                      and on the valve.
                      Still the lever seems ot be half way between off
                      and on. I have
                      learned not to fix anything that is working.  So,
                      7:30 it is
                      until it starts leaking someday. </span></p>

                        Did I miss the answer to the question? Is it
                        closed in the
                        counterclockwise position? My BJ8 is open
                        (getting heat) with the
                        lever at the 7:30 position viewed from the
                        front. It has always
                        been that way. In US plumbing the heat would be
                        off with the lever
                        perpendicular to the hose and valve. </span></p>

                          added: Be careful trying to
                          turn, esp. if it hasn't<br>
                          been 'exercised' in a while. The handle is
                          fragile (maybe soak in

                          penetrant first). Also, the valve is
                          spring-loaded, if you can push

                          in and out a few times may help loosen it.<br>
