BJ8's fan guard. I saw photos of a supposedly original BJ8 and the color
appeared to my eye as a bit 'purplish;' i.e. it had some blue in it. I
was told--forget where/by whom--that it was 'Chinese Red' (or 'China
Red'). If you search, you'll see that Chinese Red has a myriad of
shades, from brownish to purplish. The color of the BJ8's fan guard was
very similar to:
I'm am assuming, of course, that the same shade of red was used on the
100s as on the 6-cyls but, in true BMC tradition, the builders may have
used any handy bucket of reddish paint (the fan guards were hand-painted
apparently). I ended up using a can of 'Chinese Red' spray paint, which
I'm not altogether happy with (I did brush it on, though). You can
probably get a quart of paint custom-mixed with a specific RGB blend.

A paint shop, using a colorimeter, determined my BJ8 had been painted
'Peking Red,' a stock--at one time--GM color. It has an orangeish tint
which, I'm told is correct for 'Colorado Red.'
