Many, many moons ago (around 1963 or so, I was 16 and not really
very Healey wise), my 54, 100-4 was actually being driven daily
and not buried away in the back corner of the race barn/garage
like it is today. I usually used what ever oil was left over in
the can (yes, can back then it was in a can, from oil changes,
generally from my Modified Race Car. What weight , you say? It
was straight 50 Weight, non-detergent, Oilzum. The car ran well
with no ill effects what-so-ever. The carbs were adjusted using a
length of fuel line to listen for proper synchronization (I
certainty didn't have a fancy </font><font face="Arial"><font
face="Arial">synchronization tool or for that matter the extra
money to buy one</font>.</font><br>

circumstances should a heavy-bodied lubricant be
used”. The oil is to act as a damper and reduce the
pistons in the carburetor from fluttering. Once the
temperature gets above about 40 deg C the viscosity
is very similar for all of the lubricants mentioned.
Note 75W/90 gear oil is very close to 15W/40 motor
oil. Straight 90 is probably not a good choice as it
will be heavy-bodied at lower temperatures.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

watched a recent John Twist YouTube
video today on fitting H type SU carbs
to a T type MG. In the video he says
to use 90 wt gear oil in the dashpot.
He also said the lighter oils and ATF
that so many people recommend
contribute to the early wear and tear
on the carb. Anyone else using this
weight oil in the carb? All my life I
have been putting 20 wt oil in the
dashpot. </span><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
