Yep. Hence the 'tap the face of the gauge trick' (for dramatic
effect, if nothing else).

Side note: I've taken several speedos apart and actually got one or
two back together. I expected to see an alleged 'jeweled bearing,'
but as far as I could tell it was brass-on-brass (the brass needle
spindle against a brass pocket). No Swiss watch stuff.

If you do decide to replace it, maybe consider a digital
replacement that you can get built with the exact face as your
current one - it can be tuned to be dead accurate -
independent of diff or tires. The only issue is that there is
a small lcd trip recorder. I have one on my BJ8 and nobody
notices the lcd as the speedo face is the same as original and
as the tacho, About 180 gbp from Speedy Cables in Wales. You
would need to sort out a source of pulses to drive it.
Absolutely no needle jiggering either - it is just like a
modern car speedo.

my cable spins freely when I remove it from the back of the
speedo, but does not spin while moving. I have not yet
jacked it up to see if my angle drive is shit or not. I need
to replace it anyway as my speedo is off with new tires. It
said 78 , but I was really doing 65., Honest officer
