it may be that these aren't "wrong" in the usual sense.<br>

Shortages were very much part of the time and if they were short of<br>
washers they would have used what they had to hand, provided of course<br>
that they fitted! There were lists of acceptable alternatives.<br>
<br>
It's interesting that you found this on two early engines. Do you have<br>
dates for them? While things got considerably better in the early 60s,<br>
if these engines were manufactured in say '59 or 60 my guess would be<br>
that they couldn't get the washers originally specified and used what<br>
they did have. Knowing that they were in the same batch of engines might<br>
confirm that.<br>

We often tend to forget what a bad place the UK was in at that time,<br>
shortages were rife everywhere in industry and there was no concept of<br>
JIT :-) .<br>
