<p class="MsoNormal">I agree with you, I have cleaned, sanded with a 3M scratchpad some Bakelite trafficator and then applied up to three coats of India ink, allowed it to dry for about a day and then followed by a couple coats of shoe polish and buffed it
to a medium lustre. No shiny like being painted and clear coated but they were not that way to start with. It gave very satisfactory results but lasted only about three years and I had to redo it again.

<div class="PlainText">My memory tells me that it is not Bakelite, which is an early form of<br>
plastic. I recall reading that it was a compression of sawdust and other<br>
things.<br>
<br>
I have successfully sanded one back and sparingly used India Ink which is<br>
allowed to dry followed by black shoe polish in many applications. The<br>
original finish is not entirely smooth nor full gloss as you would get from<br>
paint.<br>
