I’ve not had experience with the Moss Gold unit, but a number of years back I replaced my sender with a Moss unit and it was highly inaccurate. After speaking with Dave Nock, I inspected the windings on the coil and it looked like a sleepy 3<sup>rd</sup> grader had assembled it. I got a restored original unit from Dave. It works reasonably well. I say reasonably because I suspect my gauge could use some adjustment but I’ve not attempted it. Rather, I calibrated the sender so that is accurate at the low end reading empty with about 1 gallon remaining, but a full tank reads about 7/8. The windings on the resistor in the sending unit are not as close as an original sending unit and some sending units only have one contact point. I believe the Moss Gold unit has corrected this issue. This could cause the erratic behavior. However the main reason is most likely:<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;color:#1F497D'>2. The magnetic coils inside the gauge control the full to empty range. They are hard to adjust even if you send the gauge to a shop to have it calibrated. I have not been able to resolve this issue. I think it is because the coils are out of plumb with respect to the pickup within the gauge due to adjustment wear over the years.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'> </span><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;color:#1F497D'><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;color:#1F497D'>I can’t find the MG site that has more information about this issue but the picture below show the coils and pickups. You can adjust the coils by loosening the nuts on the back of the case but when the nuts are tightened the coil calibration is affected. I have never successfully calibrated the gauge so it works correctly. The one I was removing was at least 12 years old but it did keep fairly accurate track of the fuel level.<o:p></o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black'> <o:p></o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black'>The new one seemed to work OK for a few hundred miles, but now it does not move off the full mark until the tank is more than 50% empty. I have carefully checked all the wires and grounding connections and everything looks clean and tight.
