when first restoring my Healey I built the electronic switch box described on
that web site to calibrate my gage. I think it worked well and I still
have that box with the rotating switch. If I can’t find a problem with the
sending unit I’ll go back to the gage and attempt to reset the calibration.

The windings on the resistor in the sending unit are not as close as an original
sending unit and some sending units only have one contact point. I believe the
Moss Gold unit has corrected this issue. This could cause the erratic behavior.
However the main reason is most likely:<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

The magnetic coils inside the gauge control the full to empty range. They are
hard to adjust even if you send the gauge to a shop to have it calibrated. I
have not been able to resolve this issue. I think it is because the coils are
out of plumb with respect to the pickup within the gauge due to adjustment wear
over the years.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

can’t find the MG site that has more information about this issue but the
picture below show the coils and pickups. You can adjust the coils by loosening
the nuts on the back of the case but when the nuts are tightened the coil
calibration is affected. I have never successfully calibrated the gauge so it
works correctly. By the way, be forewarned if you decide to disassemble the
gauge it is a very delicate process and you could break the needle or the very
fine coil wires.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

leak around the fuel sending unit I needed to remove the unit and decided to
replace it with a new one from Moss Motors. The one I was removing was at
least 12 years old but it did keep fairly accurate track of the fuel
