<p>If used with water instead of proper coolant electrolytic
corrosion will be most likely between the aluminium and copper
which are chemically far apart. A NOS steel/asbestos/steel head
gasket will be better as there will be far less electrolytic
corrosion. Better still to use a modern composite head gasket if
available, but check the torquing procedure as that may be very
different compared to the old fashioned way. Sometimes new studs
and nuts are required.</p>
<p>As mentioned by Alan regular re-torquing an aluminium head on a
cast iron block is sometimes necessary as the aluminium of the
head expands quite a bit more than cast iron/steel when hot thus
exposing the copper head gasket to a varying compression all the
time which will harden and flatten the copper. A steel/asbestos
or composite head gasket may be less sensitive to this. <br>
</p>
<p>Make sure you use thick machined and hardened steel washers under
the head nuts to prevent damage to the head.<br>
</p>
<p>If the copper gasket has no visible damage you may possibly reuse
it after annealing, heating it evenly to cherry red and letting it
cool down.</p>

<div dir="ltr">The Ali head probably needs to be retorqued a
little more often than a steel head.... 10 years is a while,
probably why the gasket blew.</div>

I bought a Denis Welsh head. It is a simple bolt on but you
are going to add their studs and nuts and a steel cylinder
head gasket - at least that is what I did. Go to the web site
and read all that applies to cylinder heads. You can buy a
bare head or one that has been prepped for street or
competition. It is cheaper to buy from the UK than from the US
resellers. I only have 70 miles on my BN1 but so far so good.<br>
