<p>My BJ8 had, I believe, the original pump on it when I bought it
with 64K miles. The fitting wasn't a Zerk but similar to the
oiler fittings on old equipment; I bought a 'water pump grease
gun' that looked rather like a large metal syringe with a stubby
tip. The special 'water pump grease' I bought came in a tub and
was very thick and tacky, I don't think it would even go through a
regular grease gun. I suspect the pump you got from HS has a
sealed bearing and the threaded hole is for people who want to go
the extra distance on a resto and want to install the fitting,
even if not used. The definitive answer would be to call HS and
ask.</p>
<p>I've never bench spun a pump before installing, and never had a
leak from a pump because of it (blown bellows, yes, but not from
the seal).</p>

have seen some pumps where there is no tapped/drilled hole
for a grease nipple, and i have also read opinions about
the wisdom of NOT lubing the pump with grease. Can anyone

i have read/heard recommendations to run the pump
dry--without coolant--for some period of time in order to
promote quicker bedding in of seal or something along those
lines. What is the groups' experience/wisdom on this?</span><br>
