<p>I would strongly advise NOT to use glue/cement/thread
locker/sealant. It may cause problems later on at disassembly.
Paramount is to remove all burrs from all surfaces involved: key,
hole, wheel, and chamfer very slightly the key and the slot in the
wheel. Make sure everything is spotlessly clean and free of any
debris, use brake cleaner and a small brush for that. After
everything is dry, use oil or light grease on the key and wheel
and make sure the key sits properly in the hole in the shaft so
that the wheel slides over the key without problems. If the key is
still pushed out of the hole try to use some longish piece of wire
looping it around the key and twist the wire until all is tight
(the ends should be out beyond the wheel), push on the wheel which
will push back the wire loop that will keep the key in place until
the very end when it will slide of. You can then untwist the wire
and remove it.</p>

<div>I have used heavy grease to hold things in place during a
difficult assembly process. I might caution that you need to
decide if grease might be a problem with assembly of parts in
this area. Otherwise, you might try blue thread locker and
let it set before assembly. Or perhaps just use rubber
cement.</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">Trust you all had a pleasant
Christmas.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Whilst lining up to replace my
3000’s harmonic balancer, I decided to replace
anything in that general area that might fail
before I next delve in there again. So, the chain,
the tensioner, the seal etcetc….all replaced. (I
only seem to get in there about every 20 years).</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">See attached.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Started to rebuild and am
attempting to get the chain in the right place and
everything lined up. I get the bright links where
they should be and start to push the two gears
onto their shafts. All goes well until they’re <u>apparently</u>
almost home. Then the little key drops to the
floor. About 4 times now….maddening. Is there a
pros’ trick to this seemingly easy task? If there
is, I’d really like to have it!</p>
