      those stepped drill bits until you have the right size hole. Use a
      variable speed electric drill square on the surface and start from
      zero rpm-slowly. Use some WD40 or machining oil for cooling the
      metal.<br>

      I don't think the punch would be any worse than the drill, and
      without it the bit will likely skitter across the surface, doing
      more damage than the punch.  I think it's risky no matter how you
      do it, but at least the tape gives you a sporting chance.  What do
      you need to drill, after painting?<br>
