Hi Tom

I went to my tool chest which has a drawer set aside for home made
tools, amongst these are a socket designed by
Michael Salter for removal of the brass drain plug on BJ8s as well
as the tools I used for the removal and
replacement of the dust extruder and oil seal for the steering box
of a BJ8. I have attached two photos of
the items I used, the very small screw driver, the small punch and
the third item used to push the two replacement
items into final position (a piece of mild steel partially curved
to match the shaft of the steering shaft
(like Bob Spidell, Michael, and Jean sometimes necessity is the
mother of ones ingenuity) ;-)

To add to Jean's suggestion, I have
actually replaced the dust extruder and oil seal by first
removing the steering arm,
then using a small screw driver with its' blade bent as a hook
to remove them. Then carefully pushing their replacements into
place
with a small punch of which the end was ground flat. I added
Penrite steering box oil; and also on Jean's suggestion
obtained from him some John Deere corn head grease.

I will answer your question #2. You can
replace the dust excluder by removing the steering lever
and it may be possible to replace the oil seal with the
box in the car, I have never done it that way, likely a
little more difficult. However, I would lave it in and
instead I would drain the oil and replace it with John
Deere Corn Head Grease, it is a light grease and that will
take care of your leak. I did this on the suggestion of
Bob Yule at Autofarm about two years ago, best thing I did
to stop the leak.
