I agree with Alan that given proper mating surfaces sealant compound should not be necessary but nevertheless I generally put a light smear of gray RTV on the gasket prior to installation. Alternatively I have run without a gasket using sealant only and that works as well. my opinion. Reason?: corrosion in the crevices around the flange,
bearing etc. The water wil not dry out for a long time.<br>
I prefer using thin oil, WD40, 3 in 1, sewing machine oil etc. It
will slightly swell the paper, makes it pliant, prevents sticking
and prevents corrosion.<br>
