Initially the car's cooling ability seemed better but after a year or two i began to experience more problems coping with heat, esp. in traffic. I had already fit the usual upgrades (new radiator, etc) and so I was a bit baffled.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="color:#3333ff"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="color:#3333ff">Eventually I removed the fan and when I placed it on a flat surface I saw that it had taken a concave set (when viewed from the front), I assume from all the flexing--and no doubt this had degraded the fan's ability to pull air through the rad.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="color:#3333ff"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="color:#3333ff">I discarded the plastic fan and put on a metal flex fan. Thank you - you have good history and records.<br>
I think that my fan is different to the construction you describe ??; it has<br>
a one piece metal spider and each blade is riveted with 5 rivets to it for<br>
about 1/2 of the length of the blade.<br>
See enclosed pix. and hopefully is not the Moss/China one with all the<br>
problems. ?? The blade spacing is symmetrical so it is not the Texas cooler<br>
one.<br>

I am of the opinion that we really only need the help of a fan in slow<br>
traffic and particularly after the engine has been working (increased<br>
losses) after a run at some speed and the oil is really hot. Ideally I would<br>
like to remove it for quietness and to regain a few HP when cruising and<br>
replace with an electric one; however this seems to be a tight fiddly<br>
conversion ...<br>
Anyone with experience doing this...??<span class=""><br>

Roger, at the root of the blades where they transition to the hub there are<br>
semi-circular cutouts. The blades flex and the fatigue cracks start at<br>
those cutouts. The first thing to notice would be paint flaking off in that<br>
area.<br>
Moss actually replaced my first 6-blade fan that failed with another one<br>
just like it. I guess they got some other subsequent reports of failures<br>
and sent out a bulletin to remove the fans and return them. When I removed<br>
the second fan, I saw the chips in the paint exactly where the first blades<br>
had failed.<br>
The history of the fans in my car was as follows. Numbers in parentheses<br>
are the odometer readings at each time:<br>

3 May 95 (31590) Installed 6-blade metal fan<br>
16 Jan 96 (34103) Failed 2 blades, damaged radiator header tank, knocked<br>
fan guard loose and put a 2" gash in it (retained by radiator shroud).<br>
5 Mar 96 (34105) Installed replacement 6-blade metal fan<br>
14 Feb 97 (35660) Removed second fan and returned to Moss. Noted fatigue<br>
cracks beginning in root of all blades (paint chips).<br>

As you can see, the fatigue cracks for the second fan were starting only<br>
1500 miles after installation.<br>
<br>
Both fans were yellow 6-blade fans and I believe they were stamped "Made in<br>
China" (or perhaps it was on the box they came in).<br>
