Had it happen to a 100 BN1 I once owned, with a four-stud rear end some years back.

Have also seen the axle splines twist in a racing 3000.

This happened to me in a bugeye once. but I've never heard it happening in a big Healey.

The right rear axle broke. Does imply a defect in the metal casting. No trauma to the axle that I can recall. I'm just glad it's not the clutch or transmission..
