 Thanks for you comments, Alan. They mechanics doing the repair said that it appeared as though the axle had sustained damage in the past. Perhaps your observation explains how this could happen.rich antal

The axles can build up cracks over time with alot of back and forth application of loads.  Generally not an issue on big healeys because the axles are short (less tortional stress) and the cars are not heavy.  I broke an axle on my A90, easy to do!

That said if you are going up and down hills all the time, you can build up stress fractures then it finally goes.

Thankfully a pretty easy fix.
