There are also magnetic jackets that go around the exterior of engine
canister (spin-on) oil filters though you would not be able to
determine what if anything *additional *was collected by the magnet.
In any case I generally cut apart my oil filters and examine the filter
media for shiny bits of bearing surfaces.
