Alan, thanks for reminding me about down shifting my poor old still working fine AH gearbox.

Steve -

As a general rule, I never bother downshifting in the BJ8 box except from 4th to 3rd, anything less you are better off using the brakes because brake pads are way cheaper and easier to replace than synchro rings or a clutch. Of course this means you have to brake intelligently (esp. going downhill) and not burn em.

Another thing to consider other than a worn synchro is if the throwout bearing is worn, you'll have a tendency to grind various gears.

Best,

Alan

My question for you on my transmission rebuilt is when I was downshifting from third gear to second the gears were grinding I was always having to double clutch to get it in the second gear. I have replaced just about every part in the gearbox including the second gear which I thought was the problem as the synchro was bottoming out or touching the face of gear it was well worn. Went yesterday for my first test drive and all of the gears worked perfectly and shifted very smoothly but when I try to downshift from third to second it grinds terribly I had to come to a complete stop to be able to shift it into second gear. It shifts from 1st to 2nd no problem third and fourth gears work very well as does reverse. Do you have any suggestions? I couldn’t find anything on the tolerances between the gears would you have access to some kind of chart or spec sheet? My other thought was the plunger in the sliding hub might not be engaging on the first motion shaft. Any thoughts or ideas for me to try!

I would certainly appreciate any help you might be able to provide!
