I'm not an engineer, but I imagine one difference would be the filter change interval - a larger filter being able to be changed less often. My guess is that the MGB, being a "newer" car, has a longer interval between oil filter changes, say 6000 miles v. 3000 for the BN2. But that's without looking at maintenance schedules.
