I’ve used silicone brake fluid in my BJ8 since the late 1980s, and have never had a problem with it – no corrosion on or in the brake parts, and no stripped paint due to spills. It is not particularly hard for me to find, but it is more expensive.

I've had silicone in my BJ8 for over 30 years and 150K miles, and DoT4 in my BN2 for 15 or so years and just a few hundred miles (my dad put in in after a total system overhaul). The silicone has never caused a problem that I can attribute to it, but the DoT4 gelled once after the car sat for a couple years and recently one of the slave cylinders sprung a leak. Note the DoT4 that caused the problems wasn't Castrol.
IMO, either is fine, but you should flush and replace the DoT4 every few years. Silicone is available, but somewhat harder to source.

Some will swear by silicone. I prefer DOT 4.

Mike,
DOT4 has worked for me in both A-H I have owned over the years, actually since 1984 and it has served me well, this is why I stick with it. I think you will also have some good reports on Silicone as well

At this point in the restoration I have a completely rebuilt brake system with all new components and tubing. Now is the time to make the decision to use DOT 4 or Silicone. What's the consensus, if there is one?
