[Healeys] massive oil leak

Years ago someone suggested cleaning up the oil and spraying athletes' foot spray on and watch where is displaces as the oil drips leaving a trail to the source. I would imagine that if the added rear seal dislodged, it would not produce more oil than if the rear seal had never been added.

I know what you mean Michael, but I once had an oil filter leak that spewed out a substantial amount of oil, and a lot of it was left dripping from the engine-gearbox junction. As I initially said, the filter leaks can be hard to trace .

I've not been following this string that closely as I have been travelling but I thought that the initial posts described the leak as coming from the engine-transmission junction and the small hole in the tranny. If that's the case I don't see how a leak at the oil filter cannister could be the cause.

I wonder if the scroll seal had been replaced by what we call a "proper" rear seal and if it had somehow become dislodged, allowing major amounts of oil into the bellhousing and ontio the garage floor?

I did some research awhile back about oil filter leaks and found that there are reports that over-tightening the canister can sometimes damage the sealing O ring to such an extent that it can cause a substantial oil leak.

Spray break cleaner all over an d clean up the oil. Fill your block, starts the car, once any pressure shows on your gauge, turn it off. Check for leaks.
I'll bet it's the filter. If canister type, the seal ring must have slipped, if spin on conversion, make sure you put a thin coat of oil on the seal and tighten

changed oil in a club member's tri carb. went to get gas and noticed lots of oil under car. by the time i got back had lost about 4 qts or more of oil on a few mile drive. coming from rear of engine and coming out bottom joint and cotter pin hole. was only a small drip before oil change. assume it is coming from rear main, but could it fail that fast? any other places to look?
