[Healeys] Wix 51516XP oil filter

Alan, I remember now that you mention it that Moss had a recall of their adapter for some problem like that, but it was solved before I got mine. The adapter I have has filtered my oil for almost 40 years and 131,000 miles now, so if the filter is being bypassed it has caused no problems with the engine. I think I’ll keep it.

Cheers!

Steve

Hi Steve -

I had one of those as well but I discovered it was improperly designed and the oil completely bypassed the filter in operation. Not sure if it’s because it was designed for a puralator and I had a teclemite or vice versatile, who knows.

Best,

Alan

I got one of Moss’s first “spin on” adapters in the late ‘80s because of the mess caused by the original canister, and the need to special-order the replacement cartridges. This adapter holds the spin-on filter parallel to the centerline of the car, with the aft end of the filter lower than the front. Changing oil is easy and causes no mess. I don’t know if this type of adapter is still available, but the one I have is the only one I’ve ever seen. All the others hold the filter perpendicular and level to the block and seem to be sized for a smaller filter than what I use.
I have several Wix 51085 filters, and all except one (China) are marked “Made in USA”. I remember back in the ‘60s that I used to pass the Wix plant in Gastonia, NC about once a week.

I use K&N 2009's which fasten to the engine laterally and wish I could find a spin-on adaptor that has the filter facing (open-end) up simply because it is much easier to avoid a mess.

yes generally if the filter is pointed down, the bigger the better... usually the wider it is is more preferable to the longer it is.

But for filter conversions on our healeys, they normally sit sideways so you gotta get it with the oil bypass valve

As a corollary to this topic, a question…..

If one has two filters identical in all respects except size, would the bigger of the two be better? ie, does size matter?

I only ask because I have latterly been using large filters, Mann W1130/1. Made in Germany.:-

MANN-FILTER Online Catalog Europe - Product Details Oil Filter <https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/eng/catalog/MANN-FILTER%20Katalog%20Europa/Oil%20Filter/W%201130~1> W 1130/1

Impossible with the original Lucas starter.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Simon

Don,

It makes absolutely no difference where the filter is made unless the manufacturer specifies different material in its manufacturing process. Absolutely every step of the fabrication is automated and made by robots except the step of lining up the bottom part of the filter and I doubt an American can drop it in place any better than a Chinese. See a video on YouTube how Fram filters are made.

Given the relatively low price of an oil filter, I would still change the filter every oil change.
