Many may not realize that Naugahyde comes from Naugatuck, Connecticut. If you need to replace it, apparently there are still several bands of free-ranging Naugys running throughout Naugatuck. If you are able to catch one (they are fast), you might be able to fashion new Naugahyde seat covers. While Naugys reportedly come in different colors, some say that those variations are due to the latest pollution in the Naugatuck River (another reason for the demise of the former home of Peter & Paul Mounds).

After working on the mechanical items of my BJ8 I turned my attention to the upholstery.  It is in excellent condition with no tears or scratches, only a little tired, especially the dashboard.  As I have a bottle of angelus leather dye in Jet black for real leather, I put a layer on the dashboard, and it soaked in quite nicely.  After drying over night with a soft terry cloth clean rag I hand rubbed and buffed the surface to a nice shine.  Now if it was real leather, a further layer of black carnauba shoe polish would be applied.  So, I used Esquire rubbing it in to the surface as I would for leather shoes, let dry and rubbed the surface to a nice shine.  At the same time, I removed the arm rest from the right-hand door because the Naugahyde had peeled off the frame.  After cleaning off all the hot glue residue and using my handy Craftsman hot glue gun with bonding glue and large binder paper clips to hold the fabric in place after applying the glue the repair was ready for a polishing.  However, I thought I would look up how to restore Naugahyde and was advised to use Mequiar’s natural shine protectant which I will apply to the dashboard also when it comes from Amazon. Meanwhile, what do you members of this group recommend for the treating the leatherette/Naugahyde on our Healey’s for cleaning and restoration.
